On a forest walk with Milton, one of the forest guards, as he checks a hummingbird nest (the thing he's holding) for eggs. After checking it, he collects and marks the eggs and measures them, as part of a big project on hummingbirds in Ecuador that the reserve is doing.
Below, baby hummingbirds in a nest (in the second photo, look for each of their beaks on the left side of the nest). They breathe so quickly because they are so small. While we were looking at these, one of the parents was hovering nearby, checking to see what is going on. The nests are very well concealed, and almost all of the ones that we found were directly above the river, hanging on a vine.
